How my Turbo Experience start. 

For a long time I attempt to switch to Opera, I always liked the ideas proposed, as well they are being behind many features that are standard today and contains all browsers, such as CSS, tabbed browsing, the blocking pop-ups, integration of email client, etc.

Why not adopt it?

Most of all because some minor flaws, and compatibility problems

Firefox lover, before was named Firefox, according gained public was losing my interest, increase memory usage, come with more useless features, a lot of launchs and leave behind the good performance. So it was time to change. 

Hear about the beta of Opera 10, in the features I read something that caught my attention, Opera Turbo, a system that increased the speed of navigation ... at the beginning i hust belived the half, beacuse all browsers are saying the same thing. 

  I decided to download it and try ... but ... Why?

• I've always used Dial-up connection, yes that  you dial from your phone and connect at 56Kbps, so this was a good idea, butm years ago, a probe a Google software a never notice a change.
• With 128MB of RAM, the images gonna be less heavy, and use less cache, and can reduce the cache size and recude the resources usage of Opera because all images will be compresed and dont take much time to re-download.
• Like any mortal, you do everything that make faster your PC.

The Experience:

I would not make an article with a dog surfing the web or a grandfather wathcing "mamis" in Opera Turbo, or something funny just for a shirt. I want share my experience, someone with 128RAM and Dial-up, that each time power on the computer and browse the internet is a totally different experience. 

Start browsing sites like skins.be or bastardly.com, I notice a big difference in speed, as in images, so far I like this. 

Then was time to do some tests with more complex sites, gamespot.com and eluniversal.com.mx everything perfect, just, I see the images download quickly, but the webs are slow to respond to some basic features, Javascript, AJAX. 

Flash animations are gone, for someone with 128MB of RAM flash is never Welcome. 

Yes, finally Opera make me want keep it, then, I'm going imediatly to congrats Opera staff, add Opera in my personal webite links section (yes, this site), and change the recommendations in my site (still this), and leave out Firefox.

Everything goes in goodspeed; on the Turbo icon i see almost 4X more speed, its amazing. 

Browse here, there, I join the Opera community, I talk about this feautre, is almost a miracle, but...

The dream ends. 

Immediately I see that while reducing the cache memory and disk, Opera like Firefox, Chrome, Safari, reaching 123.000 Kb in virtual memory, and at 56.000 Kb in RAM. The story of my life. The solution of all browsers? Reset.

I start with 23.000 Kb in virtual memory and 5,000 Kb RAM, looks beautiful, and the limit was reached, with only 4 or 5 tabs open. Turbo wasnt developed for this, but frankly thought that this would be a department that would benefit from technology.

The hangover after the party 

After the excitement, I ntoice that some sites had not worked well, and although the images are downloaded faster but also takes time to process the page, i mean, between sending the URL and the full page is displayed. 

Opera Turbo dont work with cPanel used for the maintenance of this page. 

In addition, the server is intermittent, sometimes stops working without warning, others warns that will not work and continues working, but this is tolerable, since we are in a Beta version. 

OK, there are two (of three) problems that will not happen for many people, because almost dont have 128Mb of RAM and done create their website with cPanel. An the three problmes is because the beta version.

So here is my score of Opera Turbo.

PROS:

• Reduction in bandwidth usage, with a dial-up connection, this is the heaven.
• Safe navigation, all SSL connections do not pass for the Opera Turbo server
• Descativation option, and Opera alerts when the server will shutdown.
• Compatible with almost any site, at least the most famous, Gmail, Hotmail, Facebook, Youtube, etc.. 
  

CONS:

• Not all sites support, someones will never pass the authentication.
• Flash objects are disabled (for me this is a PRO).
• Do not use the disk cache, each restart Opera download all the pages (images, text, etc.).

NEEDS: 

• Remove cons above
• Enable Opera Turbo only for selected websites, like Javascript and Plugins.
• Keep it debuging, is a fantastic tool.

HOW IT WORKS / COMO FUNCIONA
 

COMIENZO DE LA SECCION EN ESPAÑOL 

Como comenzo mi experiencia con Opera Turbo:

Desde hace mucho tiempo he intenado cambiar a Opera, siempre me han gustado las ideas que propone, ademas de estar detras de muchas caracteristicas que hoy en dia son estandares y que todos lo navegadores contienes, como son las CSS, la navegacion por pestañas, el bloqueo de pop-ups, integracion de cliente de correo, etc.

Por que no lo adoptaba?

 Mas que nada por algunos pequeños defectos, problemas de compatibilidad.

Amante de Firefox, desde antes que se llamara asi, conforme fue ganando publico fue perdiendo mi interes, cada vez mas pesado, con caracteristicas mas inutiles, ademas de lanzamientos continuos y dejano atras el rendimiento. Asi que era hora de cambiar. 

Escuche sobre el beta de Opera 10, dentro de las caracteristicas, lei algo que me llamo la atencion, Opera Turbo, un sistema que aumentaba la velocidad de navegacion... al pricipio lo crei a medias, ya que todos los navegadores dicen lo mismo.  

Lo descargue y me decidi a probarlo... pero... por que?

• Siempre he usado conexion Dial-up, osea esa que marcas con tu telefono y te conectas a 56Kbps, asi que esta era una buena portunidad, alguna probe un software de Google pero nunca note un cambio.
• Cuento con 128MB de RAM, asi que con imagenes menos pesadas, se usaria menos cache, ademas de que podria reducrlo ya que las imagenes no taradarian mucho en volverse a descargar.
• Como cualquier mortal, quieres todo aquello que haga mas rapida tu PC.

La experiencia:

No quisiera hacer un articulo con un perro navegando, o un abuelo viendo "mamis" en Opera Turbo, o poner algo chistoso, solo por una playera. Quiero compartir una experiencia, por que para alguien Dial-up y 128RAM, cada que prendo la computadora y navego en internet es una experiencia totalmente diferente.

Al comenzar a navegar por sitios como skins.be o bastardly.com, noto una gran diferencia, tanto en velocidad, como en imagenes, hasta el momento me gusta esto.

Comienzo a hacer algunas pruebas con sitios mas complejos, Gamespot.com y eluniversal.com.mx, todo perfecto, veo que cargar rapido las imagenes, aunque tardan en responder a algunas caracteristicas basicas.

Las animaciones flash se han ido, gracias, con 128MB de RAM flash nunca es bievenido.

Porfin, Opera llena mi ojos, inmediatamente voy a mi pagina personal y agrego a Opera en la seccion de links, cambio las recomendaciones, y dejo fuera Firefox, que seguia aunque hacia mucho que ya lo odiaba. 

Todo va en miel sobre hojuelas, el indicador, llega casi a os 4X de velocidad, se nota.

Navego por aqui, por alla, me uno a la comunidad Opera, los felicito es casi un milagro lo que esta sucediendo, pero...

Todo sueño termina.

Inmediatamente veo que aunque reduje el cache y la memoria en disco, Opera al igual que Firefox, Chrome, Safari, llega a 123,000Kb en la memoria vitual, y 56,000Kb en la memoria RAM. La historia desde hace muuuuchos años. Lo reinicio, ultima solucion que dan tooodos los navegadores.

Comenzamos con 23,000Kb en memoria virtual y 5,000Kb en RAM, y al poco tiempo llegamos al limite, apenas con 4 o 5 tabs abiertas. Se que no tiene mucho que ver con la tecnologia, pero sinceramente pense que este seria un departamento que saldria beneficiado por la tecnologia.

La cruda despues de la fiesta 

Despues de la emocion, me di cuenta que algunos sitios no funcionaba del todo bien, y aunque las imagenes se descargaban mas rapido tambien tomaba mas tiempo procesar la pagina, entre el envio de la URL y el despligue de la pagina completa.

No funciono con tegnologias como cPanel, que utilizo para el mantenimiento de esta pagina.

Ademas de que el servidor es muy intermitente a veces deja de funcionar sin avisar, a veces avisa que no va a funcionar y sigue funcionando, aunque esto es tolerable, ya que estamos en una version Beta. 

Claro, son dos problemas que para muchos no sucederan, ya qu casi nadie tiene 128Mb de RAM e igual casi nadie tiene paginas que maneja atravez de cPanel.

Los demas aspectos son muy buenos.

Asi que aqui esta mi calificacion para Opera Turbo.

Finalicemos con una lista:

PROS:

• Reduccion en el uso de ancho de banda, con una conexion Dial-Up, esto es el mismo cielo
• Navegacion segura, las conexiones SSL no pasan por el servidor de Opera
• Opcion de activar y desctivar el servicio, ademas de alertas por parte de Opera en caso de que el servidor vaya dejar de funbcionar.
• Compatible con casi cualquier sitio, al menos los mas famosos, Gmail, Hotmail, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

CONTRAS:

• No soporte todos los sitios, en algunos nunca pasa la autenticacion.
• Los objetos Flash estan deshabilitados (aunque para mi esto es es un punto a favor)
• No usa cache del disco, cada que reiniciar Opera vuelve a descargar todo (imagenes, texto, etc.)

LO QUE NECESITA:

• Quitar los contras antes mencionados
• Activar Opera Turbo solo para sitios web seleccionados
• Seguir depuradolo, es una herramienta fantastica.
